Wayne County adopts medical examiner fee schedule, sets investigator pay

Chair Chris Moore introduced Resolution No. 26-21 under Iowa Code section 331.802 and outlined the board's intent to establish consistent fees for medical examiner investigations. The resolution was moved by Supervisor Lance Lange and seconded by Supervisor Todd Wilson and carried by the members present.
Under the adopted schedule, a Medical Examiner Investigator investigation fee of $250 will be paid for each investigation and is intended to cover scene response, documentation and related on-scene duties. The Medical Examiner consult and medical authority fee is set at $100 per case when review, concurrence or medical-legal determination is required. A $100 transportation fee will apply when county personnel transport a decedent to the State Medical Examiner's Office because a licensed funeral home is unavailable or refuses transport. The schedule also allows a $100 extreme-or-hazardous-case differential (for advanced decomposition, biohazard exposure, unsafe scenes, and similar conditions) and provides $25 per hour compensation for approved training or duties performed outside individual cases, subject to board or designee approval.
The resolution specifies that reimbursement for services will be sought from the decedent's county of residence when applicable. The board recorded the schedule as effective Jan. 1, 2026, and directed that it apply to medical examiner cases and approved duties occurring on or after that date.
