Michelle Ligga presented a draft "guide to artificial intelligence and education" to the Preston County Board of Education on Aug. 25, describing it as a nonbinding resource to help teachers and families use AI tools appropriately.
Ligga said she compiled state and district materials over the summer and used several AI tools to synthesize guidance, then proposed a color-coded system indicating permitted levels of AI use on assignments (from "no AI" to "100% AI"). "This is not policy. This is just a guide now," Ligga said, adding that the document is intended to help teachers design assignments and to save teacher planning time.
Board members voiced support for teacher training and cautioned against using AI as a scholarly source or for grading student work. Board member Mister Kisner said he favored teacher instruction on AI use but opposed permitting AI as a resource for graded schoolwork. "I am opposed to it being allowed to be used as a resource of any nature for any schoolwork," Kisner said.
Superintendent Martin advised that any board-level action or policy change should come as a superintendent recommendation. Chair Mister Tatum asked Ligga to work with the superintendent to outline steps and a rollout plan; Ligga said she would prepare color-coded guides and a plan for who to train and when. No board policy was enacted; the board asked administration to coordinate next steps and consider professional development options.
