Board asks district to keep partners ready to feed and support families during service disruptions

The committee endorsed a board item directing the superintendent to ensure the district has an operational plan and partners ready to provide food, counseling and family supports in the event of federal shutdowns, hurricanes or other disruptions that affect families'access to benefits.

Board member Dr. Gallon introduced the measure and framed it as a moral and operational responsibility to support families who rely on school meals and other services. Members described past work: during extended disruptions the district activated school cafeterias and mobilized community partners to deliver meals and supplies. Staff said they have surveyed hundreds of local organizations, publish a weekly list of community feeding locations, and have identified ten schools per region that could be activated rapidly if needed.

Board members and staff stressed that the response must be broader than meals: counseling, rental and utility assistance, and partner services (for example driver's-license reinstatement clinics) should be coordinated. Staff said briefings and a communications plan have gone to principals and that the district has been in contact with groups such as Share Your Heart and other nonprofit partners who stand ready to help.

The committee approved transmission of the item to the full board and asked staff to provide a written plan, partner contact lists, and an activation checklist that schools and regions can use to move quickly if families face benefit or income interruptions.
