Boardmembers asked staff to accelerate impact bargaining and clarify supports for teachers and staff at campuses that are closing.
Miss Thompson, who brought the item forward, said teachers are anxious about placement and relocation during campus closures and asked whether placement and moving assistance would be covered by collective bargaining. David Azarito, executive director of labor relations, said prior transitions included transfer benefits and that staff will schedule impact-bargaining sessions and stakeholder meetings by the end of the week.
Superintendent-designate staff described prior lessons learned and said teams have already begun meeting with school staff to gather feedback. Boardmembers asked that guidance on priorities and values for bargaining be provided to staff so negotiations reflect the board’s goals. The board additionally asked that walkthroughs to assess spaces not be conducted during instructional hours; staff said departments were instructed to avoid daytime interruptions and that any breaches should be reported.
The item passed unanimously; staff said they would provide a workshop update on March 24 and continue outreach to affected schools.
