District 214 considers 'Introduction to Artificial Intelligence' elective proposed at Buffalo Grove High School

Dr. Lopez described the course as a comprehensive elective covering AI applications, ethical considerations, practical skills and prompt writing for AI systems, and said Buffalo Grove teachers have taken the lead to design the curriculum. Board members asked whether the course would be limited to Buffalo Grove or shared districtwide; Dr. Lopez said Buffalo Grove will propose and pilot the course and other schools may adopt it after board approval and local course development.
Administration framed the immediate action as approval of the concept and a course shell; teachers from Buffalo Grove would then develop detailed lessons and materials. Best-case scheduling would allow other schools to participate next year if they help build the course; in the worst case Buffalo Grove would run it for a year and other schools would join later. Board members highlighted the importance of ethics, student security and rapid change in the field; one board member asked that the curriculum explicitly address safety and ethics as part of the course.
No formal curriculum vote was recorded at the committee meeting; administrators said the concept would be on the agenda for the next board meeting for consideration of formal approval.
