Miami‑Dade school board honors student teams, community partners and veterans in series of proclamations

Holmes Braddock Senior High’s boys swim team for winning the 2024 FHSAA Class 4A state championship, including comments about the team’s training regimen and coach Katia Garcia’s awards. Students and coaches accepted the board’s recognition and brief remarks from a team member highlighted gratitude to coaches and teammates.
Board member Alonso presented New World School of the Arts students who designed mascots for the Miami‑Dade Transportation Planning Organization; the board screened a student video introducing the “Mobility” mascots and heard from the TPO director, who emphasized Florida’s pedestrian and bicyclist safety record and said the student work will be used in a broader safety messaging campaign.
Chair Rojas led a resolution recognizing The Education Fund’s 40th anniversary and outlined the organization’s programs — including teacher grants, the Miami Loves Teachers campaign and the Food Forest for Schools— and the fund’s reported cumulative support for district schools. Education Fund leaders and board members accepted the proclamation and described partnerships with the district and private donors.
Additional resolutions recognized District 9 veterans now serving in schools, the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation’s 50th anniversary and Project Ready for School’s community work. Board member Espino presented a resolution honoring Ambassador Armando Balladares for his life and work as a writer, dissident and advocate; Balladares and a translator addressed the board.
Most ceremonial items passed by voice vote; the board noted votes will be formalized when the full board reconvened later in the day to complete consent agenda business.
