Mayor Washington Spivey told the committee the change is intended to expand the board’s purview to include cultural events and programming beyond traditional arts work, and that the renaming is an initial step toward establishing a full‑time staff position to coordinate arts and culture efforts. "The end goal would ultimately be that not only do we have an arts and culture board, but we also have some sort of position that, a full time position that works with the arts board," the mayor said.
Council President Dickinson moved adoption; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
The measure will appear in administrative records as a board name change; any staffing changes would require future budget or personnel action.
