Parent argues alternative‑placement decision is unfair as board upholds disciplinary committee recommendation

At a Dec. 11 hearing on student discipline (case A260351024), Megan McInnis told the Santa Rosa County School Board that the committee's recommendation to move her son, Braxton Reuter, to an alternative school was disproportionate to the incident and that she was not offered other options before the placement.
"He was given $75 to buy a THC vape from another kid ... He did not possess the money, nor the drugs," McInnis said, arguing the punishment did not fit the alleged conduct and noting her son had missed 41 days of instructional time while she pursued alternatives, including home schooling. She said school staff had not presented homeschooling as an option earlier in the process.
A board member noted the hearing would use the case number as is customary; after McInnis spoke, staff recommended the disciplinary committee's recommendations. The motion to adopt the committee's recommendation was moved, seconded and carried unanimously.
The board invited McInnis to meet with a district staff member (Brian Noah was identified earlier as director of high schools) to discuss services available to the student after the board's decision.
The board record shows the disciplinary committee recommendation was confirmed; McInnis's objections were recorded on the public record. The transcript does not show the board reversing the committee decision.
