Santa Rosa schools celebrate military families and CTE winners; board approves construction items and interlocal agreement

The Santa Rosa County School Board opened its April 2 meeting with several recognitions and routine approvals, then moved into construction and administrative business that passed unanimously.
Superintendent Dr. Barber read a memorandum designating April as the Month of the Military Family and announced that Santa Rosa County is a Purple Star School District, recognizing supports for military-connected students. School liaison officers attended to introduce and recognize local military families whose children attend Wallace Lake K–8 and East Bay K–8.
The board honored CTE achievements: John Theis of Pace High School was recognized as the Florida Career Pathway Student of the Year for computer science and information technology, and Heather Renfro of Gulf Breeze High School was named CTE Teacher of the Year for her work in multimedia design and technology.
Staff reported a recent ribbon-cutting for the Santa Rosa Center for Innovation, funded by a reported $9,000,000 grant and a $500,000 state appropriation; the center will provide pathways in engineering, culinary, automotive, construction, cybersecurity and robotics to help students earn industry certifications.
On construction and procurement, Dagg Architects representative David requested an 18‑day contract extension for TR Jackson because kitchen equipment arrived late; the board approved the change order. The board awarded the South End Athletic Services Safety Rehab to Shavers Construction (low bid $287,544 versus an engineer estimate of roughly $252,000) and discussed expected notice-to-proceed and completion dates. Sam Marshall updated the board on Jay Elementary kitchen change order 13 (the transcript lists a change order amount in the numeric range presented) and other punch-list items; the board approved the cited change orders and project status updates.
The board also approved an interlocal agreement with the Town of Jay for joint use and renovation of tennis courts (the town’s representative described a park renovation and a short walkway between the park and Jay High School).
