Board recognizes Northside NRU deputies; state attorney warns human trafficking remains a local problem

State Attorney Kathy Fernandez Rundle, called to speak by the chair, said Miami‑Dade ranks highest in Florida for trafficking and noted Florida ranks third in the United States for victims. "Miami Dade ranks number 1 in all of Florida, and Florida ranks number 3 in The United States for the number of children and other victims that are trafficked in this country," Fernandez Rundle said, adding that victims are in schools, parks and foster care and that partnerships between law enforcement and schools are essential.
The board announced that the Miami‑Dade County Schools Police Department would unveil a human‑trafficking awareness vehicle immediately after the resolution portion of the meeting and invited board members to attend. The resolution was approved by voice vote.
Board members thanked deputies for their service and described NRU deputies as trusted adults who often are first contacts for young people in crisis.
