Maywood trustees approve $20,895 interior painting bid after debate over local bidder
Summary
After a failed motion to reject all bids and negotiate with a local firm, the board approved City Wide Maintenance's low bid of $20,895.52 to paint Village Hall interior spaces; trustees debated cost, quality and support for local businesses before the vote.
Trustees debated competing bids to paint interior hallways, offices and common areas at Village Hall during the Aug. 21 meeting. Public Works Director John West recommended City Wide Maintenance’s low proposal of $20,895.52 to prime, patch and paint offices, foyers, stairways, bathrooms and frames.
Trustee I. Brandon moved to reject the bids and direct staff to negotiate with The Braun Group, a longer‑standing local firm; that motion failed on a 3–4 vote. Trustees then approved the low bidder, City Wide Maintenance, by roll call. Supporters of negotiating with Braun Group argued the village should favor long‑standing local contractors; others pointed to a sizable $13,000 difference and the village’s prior trial period with City Wide for janitorial services.
The approved contract covers interior painting only; Mr. West noted the low bid reflected the contractor’s interest in maintaining a service relationship with the village and did not, in his view, reflect lower quality. The board did not change the scope or add conditions during the vote.
Administration will execute the contract with City Wide and schedule the painting work; no start date was given in the meeting record.
