Simi Valley Unified names Erin Mahoney coordinator of teaching and learning; board honors students and staff and adopts routine resolutions

At its April 15 meeting, the Simi Valley Unified School District board voted on routine consent and action items and made two personnel announcements while recognizing several student and staff achievements.
Appointment and introductions: The board introduced Erin Mahoney as the district's new coordinator of teaching and learning, describing the role as overseeing curriculum, interim and state assessments, intervention teachers and support for visual and performing arts across elementary, middle and high schools. Mahoney, introduced to the board as the principal at Parkview Elementary School, said she was "honored and humbled" by the appointment and emphasized collaboration with school sites and community partners.
The board also introduced April Weaver as assistant principal at the Simi Institute for Careers in Education; district leaders noted the selection followed more than 40 applications and a screening process and praised Weaver's background in program development and support for at-risk and credit-deficient students.
Recognitions: Trustees recognized a series of achievements: Valley View Middle School's mock-trial team won the 2025 Ventura County Middle School championship; Rory Dennett of Royal High School received a Sandra Day O'Connor Institute civics challenge national award and a $500 prize; the board also introduced and honored several school nurses and presented employee-recognition awards and service pins. Staff highlighted the district's digital-forms rollout (Inform K12), noting more than 60 digitized forms and time savings for approvals.
Votes and routine business: The board approved the consent calendar and adopted a set of resolutions by roll call, including: Resolution No. 38-24/25 supporting National School Nurses Week (to be adopted later in the action calendar), Resolution No. 39-24/25 recognizing California Day of the Teacher (May 6, 2025), and Resolution No. 40-24/25 recognizing Classified School Employee Week. The board also approved acceptance of gifts totaling $21,766.65 for school programs and athletic support and authorized year-end appropriation transfers and district representatives for state funding applications consistent with Prop 2 rules.
Staff reports and first readings: Staff presented an overview of a new classified professional-development program in partnership with the local CSEA chapter: three compensated days (18 hours) of targeted training intended to provide job-specific skills, with modules on safety, behavior, cultural responsiveness, language acquisition and food-service protocols. A first reading also occurred for revised policy 5131.8 (mobile communication devices); staff said site administrators are preparing consistent progressive-discipline guidance.
What happens next: Several items were held at first reading and will return for future board action. The board scheduled additional recognitions for later meetings and encouraged community attendance at upcoming events including State of Our Schools and the Simi Valley Education Foundation awards.
