During the visitor comment period, a resident who said they were speaking as a senior citizen and had "been on this board for 11 years" questioned language in a March 12 board report and pushed back on claims that modest tax increases inevitably cause seniors to lose their homes.
The commenter said many factors lead seniors to sell or leave their homes and said it was unfair to suggest school taxes alone caused home loss. "I have looked around, asked people, is there anybody that you could tell me who lost their home solely on the basis of not being able to afford school taxes? I have found none," the speaker said. The commenter also questioned an earlier example that suggested a $50-a-month increase would make housing unaffordable for a specific senior.
The speaker urged the board to treat all viewpoints respectfully, criticized language they saw as dismissive of tax concerns, and said senior citizens had been used as a "pawn" in political messaging. The public-comment period closed after the chair reminded speakers of the five-minute limit and the meeting moved on to committee reports.
