CTC report: fuel‑leak testing, student competition wins and debate over generator type

A representative from the Cumberland‑Perry Area Career and Technical Center briefed the Mechanicsburg Area School District board on workspace construction, environmental testing and student program successes Feb. 10.
The CTC speaker said Aqua Terra completed initial sampling after a historical fuel leak that affected a nearby creek and water table; the company plans one more round of sampling in May and will submit results to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The speaker described remediation work and said the additional testing is intended to address outstanding concerns with the incident.
The CTC also reported competitive success for its students: FFA landscape exhibits won first place at a farm show, and several programs placed first and will compete at state or national events (carpentry, masonry, manufacturing and pin design). The speaker noted that Joni Rudy, the CTC business administrator, is retiring and that the center will seek a replacement.
On facilities, the CTC is under construction and staff expect to tie the new facility into the existing building this summer; the speaker warned that some middle‑school summer camps may be curtailed while construction continues. The CTC is also discussing emergency‑generator options with Silver Spring Township and is likely to request a natural‑gas generator rather than a diesel unit, citing supply and operational considerations.
Board members thanked the CTC representative and noted the importance of following DEP test results on the fuel‑leak issue. The CTC will meet again Feb. 23 and may report back to the board as work continues.
