Firefighters warn of fleet, staffing concerns; resident pitches film studio to Bryan leaders

Two public-comment speakers raised community-focused appeals during the Bryan City Council meeting.

Daniel Buford, president of the Bryan Firefighters Association, told the council the department faces fleet breakdowns, staffing shortages and collapsing morale that he said create safety risks. In an extended statement, Buford used an allegory to say the department’s public image does not match on-the-ground conditions and urged attention to the issues; a council member interjected that parts of his remarks were not germane to the interlocal agreement under discussion.

Later in the meeting, Melvin Bowser Jr., a Bryan resident and film producer who said he has worked in television and film, asked the city to meet with him or provide a future work session to explore a proposal to develop a film and media production studio in Bryan. Bowser said a local production infrastructure would create jobs, hotel and vendor revenue and new opportunities for local creators, and he requested staff engagement on potential public-private partnerships or incentives.

Council members thanked both speakers, expressed enthusiasm for supporting local creative economy opportunities and acknowledged the firefighter concerns; the meeting record shows council engaged but did not take immediate policy action in response to the public comments during this session.
