Medford Common Council adopts ordinance supplement, approves assessor contract and utility measures

The Medford Common Council met on March 9, 2026, at 6:00 PM and approved a package of administrative and utility items, including an ordinance supplement, a five-year assessor contract, an intermunicipal loan agreement for sewer engineering, formation of a scholarship selection committee, and funding for water-tower inspection and repairs.
Mayor Mike Wellner called the meeting to order and Alderperson Tim Hansen led the Pledge of Allegiance. City staff present included Street & Water Superintendent Jason Viergutz, City Planner Robert Christensen, City Clerk Ashley Lemke, and City Coordinator Joe Harris; City Attorney Courtney Graff was recorded as excused.
The council first approved minutes of the Feb. 23, 2026 Common Council and Committee of the Whole meetings after a motion by Laura Holmes and a second by Ken Coyer; the clerk’s minutes were recorded as approved.
The council next moved to adopt Ordinance No. 1123, which incorporates the 2025 supplement to the City’s Code of Ordinances. Laura Holmes moved to suspend Council Rules #12A and #12B and adopt the ordinance; Clem Johnson seconded and the motion carried as recorded by the minutes.
In other formal actions, the council approved a five-year contract with Accurate to serve as the municipal assessor at an annual cost of $25,200. Christine Weix moved and Ken Coyer seconded the assessor contract motion, which the minutes record as carried.
Medford Electric’s relationship with Dairyland Cooperative entitles the city to one $1,000 scholarship for a graduating student who is also a Medford Electric customer. The council approved creating a selection committee composed of the Mayor, the Electric Utility Committee Chair, the City Clerk, the Electric Superintendent and the City Coordinator to administer the scholarship.
The council accepted a loan agreement with the Village of Stetsonville to provide interim financing for engineering a sewer line from Stetsonville to Medford; Laura Holmes moved and Christine Weix seconded the motion to accept the intermunicipal financing contract, and the minutes show the motion carried.
For the city’s water system the council approved contracting with Lane Tank to inspect Tower #2 while it is empty, replace a pipe identified in that tower, and defer inspections of Towers #1 and #3 until 2027. The council directed that funds for the work come from the Maintenance of Standpipes account, coded in the minutes as #62-53713-65020; Laura Holmes moved the action and Clem Johnson seconded.
The meeting adjourned to the Committee of the Whole at 6:07 PM after a motion by Dave J. Brandner and a second by Laura Holmes.
