Bryan planning staff honored with APA recognition after busy year of permits and inspections

The Bryan Planning & Development Services Department was recognized by the American Planning Association for financial and planning excellence, and staff used the council meeting to highlight a busy year of permit and inspection work.
Martin Zimmerman, who presented to the council, said the department employed 27 people and "this last year, we issued just over 7,000 permits," and that the department conducted about 22,000 inspections in FY25. Zimmerman said staff have begun a comprehensive-plan process that staff expect the council to act on later this year and noted the department’s move to a new Development Center to improve customer service and coordination.
Mayor Bobby Gutierrez thanked the planning team and the volunteers who serve on boards and commissions, noting the department’s role in facilitating development in Bryan over the last two decades. Zimmerman emphasized continuing customer-service improvements and staff training, and invited residents to use online permitting resources.
What’s next: staff will continue work on the comprehensive plan and encourage public engagement as that process proceeds through public meetings and eventual council consideration.
