At its April 16 meeting the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly swore in and promoted eight Bayside Fire Department officers, presented Citizens Academy certificates, and adopted a proclamation declaring April 2026 Sexual Assault Awareness Month, accepted by a Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center representative.
The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly used part of its April 16 meeting to recognize local volunteers and community programs.
During a swearing-in ceremony the assembly and Chief (introduced as Alice) celebrated promotions and the completion of a methodical selection process for eight new or promoted Bayside Fire Department officers. Chief Alice described a selection process that included written and oral testing and mutual-aid participation; family members participated in the traditional badge-pinning.
Manager Amy Williams and staff also presented certificates to three Citizens Academy graduates and said presentations from the Citizens Academy will be posted on the borough website for broader access.
Mayor Jared Griffin read a proclamation declaring April 2026 Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Ellemy Tiller, outreach coordinator for the Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center, accepted the proclamation and urged the community to support survivors and discuss healthy relationships. Tiller said KWRCC worked with 38 victims of sexual assault in Kodiak in 2025 and emphasized the importance of community support and prevention.
Assemblymembers and the mayor praised volunteers and encouraged continued community involvement; no formal vote was required for the recognitions and proclamation.
