Wayne County schedules readings for Ordinance 204 amendment to tighten septic permit standards

David Rhodes, Wayne County Environmental Health Sanitarian, presented a proposed amendment to Ordinance No. 204 at the July 22 Wayne County Board meeting that would formalize permit procedures for on-site septic systems.
Rhodes told the board the amendments would require the sanitarian to determine which types of systems may be installed and to approve those systems before construction begins; the proposed amendment also states the first preference for septic tanks is cement and such tanks must be approved before construction. The board scheduled the ordinance readings for the regular 10:00 a.m. meetings on Aug. 5 (first reading), Aug. 19 (second reading) and Sept. 2 (third and final reading) in the Lower Conference Room of the Wayne County Courthouse. Rhodes noted a paper copy of Ordinance #204 and the proposed amendment are available for review at the Auditor's Office, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The proposed changes concentrate permit authority with the county sanitarian and would require advance approval of system type and tank material. The board did not act to adopt the ordinance at this meeting; the item will return for formal readings on the dates scheduled.
