Bee Cave approves $240,000 BCDC grant for Magnolia Musical Theatre's summer show

The Bee Cave City Council on Jan. 13 approved Resolution No. 2026-04 to provide BKF development corporation funds to Magnolia Musical Theatre for its 2026 season. The vote was unanimous.
Andrew Kanata, executive director of Magnolia Musical Theatre, told council his organization met most contract requirements last season and said the company generated attendance and local spending that, in their estimate, produced at least $228,000 in local economic activity. Kanata said Magnolia exceeded several performance and attendance targets but still came short on some sponsorship and hotel-booking goals; the group requested $240,000 in BCDC funds for the next season to avoid relying on personal underwriting.
"I don't think Magnolia could ever do this without the support of the city," Kanata said, arguing the free-summer-musical model depends on municipal backing. Ray Dejohn, president of Magnolia's board, told council the program contributes to community character and invites visitors from the broader Austin area.
Council members pressed on sustainability and measurement: members asked whether Magnolia has a plan to be self-sufficient, whether any BCDC funds would be used for reserves (the answer given was no), and how the city will quantify economic benefit. Staff and presenters noted the BCDC had unanimously recommended the request and that staff will use foot-traffic analytics (Placer AI) and other measures to evaluate economic impact after the season.
Council adopted the resolution by motion, with the city indicating it will review economic data after the 2026 production to inform future funding decisions.
