Board grants city easement for temporary haul route to divert quarry truck traffic

The Ector County ISD board approved a one‑year easement requested by the city of Odessa that would permit an alternate haul route along the north and west edges of a 100‑acre district parcel just northwest of the Yukon/North Faudree intersection. District staff said the easement was drafted to address semi‑tractor‑trailer traffic from a nearby quarry that currently travels through a residential intersection and presents safety and wear‑and‑tear concerns.
Aaron Smith, city manager for Odessa, addressed the board and said the quarry pit likely has "about another 3 years" of life, and that redirecting trucks to the alternate route would reduce neighborhood wear and potential safety risks. "Not only is it just safety for that intersection, but it will save millions of dollars," Smith said.
Staff described the proposed easement as an initial one‑year term, renewable by mutual agreement with the city, and noted the easement would allow trucks to access Yukon and then the loop more directly. Trustees moved, seconded and approved the easement by voice vote.
Staff said the easement is temporary and intended to mitigate truck traffic impacts on residential streets while the quarry remains active; the district retains the right to negotiate renewal terms with the city.
