Dr. O'Brien, presenting on behalf of the calendar committee, said the committee set the start date for Aug. 11, 2025 because statute disallows starting earlier than Aug. 10 (the 10th falls on a Sunday). "By statute, we cannot start any earlier than August 10," Dr. O'Brien said.
The committee emphasized aligning Flagler’s spring break with St. Johns and Volusia counties to support families and dual‑enrollment students. The proposal designates Jan. 6 and Apr. 3 as district professional‑learning days; an August preplanning week contains five days identified as a mix of preplanning and PL, with two PL days fixed and three days available for school‑level scheduling.
Dr. O'Brien said the calendar moves the student year to 179 days (down from 180) to accommodate additional professional‑learning time roughly equivalent to recurring early‑release hours used in other counties. Board members asked for clarification on how PL days would be assigned at school level and how the change affects instructional hours; staff said adjustments preserve instructional hours overall by reallocating time within the year.
The board did not take a final vote on the calendar at the workshop; staff said follow‑up will be scheduled for the regular meeting where adoption is planned.
