Youth council elects Alex LaFortune chair and Charlotte Barnes vice chair

The council opened nominations for chair after the swearing-in ceremony. McKenzie Parson moved to nominate Alex LaFortune; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll-call vote. LaFortune then presided over nominations for vice chair. Charlotte Barnes was nominated and seconded and the council approved that motion by roll call as well.
The votes were taken by roll call with members answering in the affirmative; the motions passed with the support of those present. The council then turned to its agenda of onboarding, outreach and project brainstorming.
Why it matters: Choosing a chair and vice chair establishes the council’s leadership and who will run future meetings, set agendas and act as the primary liaisons with city staff and officials. The positions are significant for a new advisory body as it starts organizing community events and projects.
What’s next: The council moved to its next items, including appointing a minutes recorder and scheduling presentations by city departments at future meetings. Members were asked to draft vision and mission ideas to discuss at the next meeting.
