Legislative Council approves interim committee appointments, chair rotations and board nominations

The Legislative Council approved a package of interim committee appointments, chair rotations and board nominations as part of routine organizational business.

Chair Mimi Stewart announced replacements and rotations across multiple interim committees and named Senator Stefanik, Senator Scott and Senator Charlie for a Behavioral Health subcommittee chair lineup; the council also added "affordability" to the mandate of the federal funding stabilization subcommittee, renaming it the "federal funding stabilization and affordability subcommittee." Speaker Javier Martinez (S12) said affordability would be a priority to develop ideas for the next legislative session.

The council approved reappointments, chair rotations and a motion authorizing the chair and speaker to make interim membership replacements as needed. The council also approved appointments to outside bodies: Representative Eleanor Chavez to the Fostering Connections Advisory Committee; Elizabeth Cotilla reappointed to the New Mexico Bioscience Authority; Mike Lofton to the Opportunity Enterprise Review Board; and representatives Janelle Anionarno and Brian Buck to the Senate Memorial 20 youth violence summit planning group. Chair Stewart additionally recommended Raul Burciaga for a Uniform Law Commission appointment and noted motions to authorize reimbursements for designees.

Members discussed staffing burdens for interim committees and the need to avoid excessive committee proliferation. Several members said existing committees require effective chair coaching so that oversight responsibilities are carried out within current structures.

Next steps: the council will proceed with the appointed membership; staff will coordinate onboarding and any needed reimbursements or logistical support.
