ODOT recommends reducing speed to 20 mph on Highway 101 segment through Nehalem

City Manager Lori Longfellow reported that the Oregon Department of Transportation’s speed-zone study recommends reducing the posted speed limit on U.S. Highway 101 through Nehalem from 25 to 20 miles per hour between 10th Street and Tohls Street. Longfellow said she recommends following ODOT’s recommendation and that ODOT will install the signage and be responsible for the associated work and costs because the road is a state highway.
Mayor Phil Chick said the change "will be great for the safety of the city." Resident Lucy Brook told the council that the main intersection can be confusing and suggested the city consider traffic-control sensors at some signals. Council gave City Manager Longfellow consensus to follow up with ODOT on the recommended change and signage.
