Pickens County approves pilot MOU with Gilmer County to store and distribute blood products locally

Pickens County commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with Gilmer County to participate in a pilot program making blood products available regionally for pre‑hospital use.
According to staff, Gilmer County will serve as the storage and distribution agency for items such as leukocyte‑reduced packed red blood cells, liquid plasma, refrigeration units, warmers, rapid infusers, tubing administration sets and related consumables. The intent is to allow Pickens County first responders quicker access to blood products when paramedics arrive on scene and stabilization or rapid transfusion is required prior to transport.
At the meeting a resident asked how the county will certify the product integrity; staff responded that hospitals will provide those products and that the program will not involve county personnel drawing or validating blood on scene. The board approved the MOU as a pilot agreement to expand access to critical blood supplies for emergency medical response.
Staff will work with Gilmer County and participating hospitals to finalize logistics and handling protocols as required by medical and regulatory standards.
