David Klein, a Greenville resident who gave his address as 1531 East Main Street, told the council he and his wife have been forced inside during July 4 fireworks because large devices land on their property and leave hot embers and debris.
"We can't be outside because of the fireworks that they are neighbors too," Klein said, describing repeated incidents and saying police had declined to respond when he called.
Council members said state fireworks rules exist but acknowledged gaps in local enforcement. Safety Service Director Dell suggested the city could review dates and restrictions and recommended referral to the council's Safety Committee for more study. Chair (council president) asked that the Safety Committee examine the issue and report back, targeting the council's first June meeting for follow-up.
The referral will let the committee consider what local regulations or enforcement tactics, if any, are available to supplement state law and to coordinate police response. Council members also asked staff to try to have a police representative present when the committee meets.
The council did not adopt any ordinance at the meeting; the action taken was to refer the complaint to the Safety Committee for further review and recommendations.
