Parent raises cafeteria food-safety concerns; district outlines protocols and family-style dining pilot

At the Feb. 28 meeting a parent, Mrs. Gearhart, told the Chartiers Valley board she was aware of two cafeteria food incidents and urged the board to establish a notification procedure so families and staff are informed promptly. She said she learned of an incident before the principal was informed.
Representatives identified only as members of the Nutrition Group responded, describing protocols the district has put in place for food handling, serving and storage and outlining notification procedures. The Nutrition Group also described a new family-style dining program at the Intermediate School called Kids Around the Table.
Board President Tony Mazzarini asked the Nutrition Group to put their game plan in writing and suggested Nutrition Inc. (the district—ood-service contractor) develop ideas to restore student confidence. Dr. Brian White said he would review the suggestions and noted organized-labor constraints that could affect cosmetic or volunteer-driven projects at the Middle School; he also suggested the Student Council might take part in any sprucing-up effort.
Communications Director Kara Droney described a district event, Celebrate CV, planned for March 23, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Intermediate School. Droney said the event will showcase student performances and artwork from all buildings, include nonprofit and municipal resource tables for families, and feature a Celebrate CV video highlighting students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The minutes note these matters during the public-comment and superintendent-report portions of the meeting; no formal board action was recorded on the cafeteria complaints during the Feb. 28 session.
