Library board elects new chair and secretary, accepts annual summer-program grant

The library board confirmed a new chair and secretary and voted to accept an annual community grant to fund summer meal and reading programs.

A member nominated themself for chair, saying “I’ll nominate myself for chairman,” and another member seconded the nomination. The board then voted by voice to approve the chair and the secretary positions. Board members also approved placing the library’s annual grant into the branch account; staff said the award is roughly the same as last year, “it’s $6,400 I think,” and will fund an eight-week summer program that will serve lunch three days a week and support summer-reading activities.

The board was given a brief description of the chair and secretary duties. The chair’s role was described as running meetings, checking the agenda and presenting the annual comp at the meeting; the secretary role was described in the bylaws as a backup to the chair. A member noted for transparency that the chair typically votes but does not usually make motions. The motion to accept the grant was seconded and approved by voice vote.

The grant acceptance will be entered into the branch account and staff said they will run the summer program similarly to last year’s model. The board did not specify further budget breakdowns at the meeting.
