Board considers hardship-transfer exception to let displaced students remain in district

Board member Zimmerman proposed creating an exception policy to allow Nassau students who experience traumatic life events (for example parental divorce and relocation) to remain enrolled in Nassau County Schools on a case-by-case basis. "In situations where you have a student who's already in Nassau County Schools and they experience a life-altering event that is beyond their control, that their educational learning system is not interrupted," Zimmerman said.
Board members discussed necessary criteria such as attendance, discipline, academic performance and transportation responsibilities. Staff said the family would typically be responsible for transportation unless a student's disability legally requires district-provided transportation. "They would have to provide the transportation," a board member said; another cautioned that mandatory transportation requirements for some ESE students may apply.
Members asked staff how many such cases exist; staff estimated they are rare and not in the hundreds. The board asked staff to draft language incorporating attendance, tardiness, discipline and academic expectations, and to return with an advertisement-ready draft in January to be voted on in February. "I'll work on some language with incorporating Mr. Zimmerman's language...I'll bring it back to y'all in January to be advertised and then, voted on in February," a board member said.
Next steps: staff to draft hardship-transfer policy language addressing attendance, transportation, discipline and academics, advertise in January and return for board action in February.
