Board honors volunteers, names Sunshine State Scholar and hears $2,000 in donations for ESE programs

The Nassau County School Board opened its Jan. 28 meeting with community recognitions: three volunteers of the year were honored, the district’s Sunshine State Scholar was announced, and a community organizer presented donations stemming from an autism-awareness event.
Bryce Cobble, the district’s director of elementary education, introduced the volunteers of the year and described them as exemplars of dedication, integrity and leadership. “These 3 individuals tonight are exemplar...,” Cobble said, calling out Liz Hinchliffe (Yulee Middle School), Sawyer Johnson (Callahan Elementary, youth volunteer), and Karen Seeley (Callahan Intermediate, senior volunteer). Certificates and a group photo were presented.
Natasha Drake, director of high schools and support services, introduced the Sunshine State Scholar, Emily Merce Roe of Fernandina Beach High School. Drake read highlights from Roe’s counselor about advanced coursework, volunteer work and extracurricular involvement, and reported Roe’s academic record: “She has maintained a 4 unweighted GPA, has a 4.67 weighted GPA.” Drake said Roe will represent the district at the state ceremony in Orlando.
Mandy Connor, event coordinator for Caitlin’s Ride for Autism and the student’s mother, described the 13th annual ride and invited board members and community members to participate. Connor announced the committee’s contributions to the district: “We have a check for $1,500 that we would like to give to the Nassau County ESE department to support exceptional education program district wide. And in addition to this, we have a $500 donation that has been made directly to Hilliard Elementary School.” She asked board members to attend the April 18 event and said registration information would be provided.
Board members and administrators thanked the honorees and volunteers and noted the broader positive effect volunteers have on school culture. The presentation portion concluded and the meeting moved to the business agenda.
