Board staff outlines staggered ELA and world-language textbook adoption timelines

Staff said the ELA adoption materials are compiled in the red folder and that the list of state-approved vendors for world languages was released in December, which put the district on a staggered timeline. "So that's why we're a little staggered," a curriculum staff member said, and the district will try to complete materials before summer. The staff speaker also said only vendors that can meet the district’s full range of language course offerings were considered.
Staff explained that following the board discussion the recommendations will be posted for a 20-day public-notice period on the curriculum page for public review, and that parents may submit feedback during that time. A staff member noted one parent from Hilliard attended and raised questions; staff said coach and teacher review aligned with the results recorded in the recommendation packet.
On phonics for primary grades, a board member asked whether the district would keep Saxon phonics. Staff replied that some vendor packages omit the phonics component and that Saxon pricing had been evaluated as an add-on for K–5.
Staff said the board will receive the recommendation for discussion on Thursday and the public notice window will follow that meeting.
