Board discusses procurement plan for metal welding building; grant amount unclear

The Nassau County School Board workshop on Feb. 9 reviewed an action item to approve purchase and ownership of a metal building to house a new welding classroom.
At the meeting the chair introduced the item and staff said the district had received grant funding to support the project. A staff member initially mentioned "$50,000" and then corrected the amount on the record to "$500,000," but no final confirmed grant document was presented during the workshop and staff said overall program costs will be greater than the building purchase alone.
Board members asked who would own and pay for the building. "They're buying it for us," a staff speaker said of the contractor, explaining the district had to phase the project because of timing for architectural plans and delivery. A district administrator said the contractor will contact the metal-building manufacturer, the manufacturer will invoice the district, and the district will send a direct payment "from Nassau County Schools" so the district will be the owner. "We will be the owners of the building," the administrator said.
Staff emphasized the phased approach was driven by scheduling: the building takes 12 to 13 weeks to arrive, and ordering sooner is necessary to meet summer construction timelines. The administrator said the agenda language about who "takes ownership" of the building while it is offloaded will be revised for clarity before the Thursday board meeting.
The workshop did not record a formal board vote on the item; staff recommended adjusting wording and returning the item as presented for the scheduled meeting. The next procedural step is the Thursday board meeting where the agenda language will be updated and the board may take formal action.
