Waconia board reviews first reads of several policies; Community Education reports staffing update

The Waconia Public School District School Board reviewed multiple policies on first reading during its Nov. 17 regular meeting, with presentations from district staff and informational committee reports.
Presenters noted the following items on first reading: policy 516 (Student Medication); policy 524 (Internet Acceptable Use), presented by Tim Koschinska; policy 522 (Title IX sex nondiscrimination policy, grievance procedure and process); policy 534 (School Meals Policy); policy 613 (Graduation Requirements), presented by Erika Nesvig, director of education services; policy 707 (Transportation of Public School Students) and policy 802 (Disposition of Obsolete Equipment and Material), presented by Pam Carman, director of finance and operations; and policy 806 (Crisis Management Policy). These were introduced as first reads and no formal board action or votes on the policies were recorded in the transcript.
In committee reports, Board Member Hagen, serving as the Community Education representative, reported that Community Education has a new coordinator, Caitlin Volkmann, a new brochure is published, and the front reception area is receiving updates. Hagen said the Community Education committee is exploring a “Fitness Year Round” program to expand fitness programming. Hagen also reported visiting Southview Elementary to meet staff and observe classroom instruction.
Chair Amott reported that he and the student board representatives attended a Minnesota School Boards Association Student Board Representative event attended by about 40 student reps and described it as a productive discussion.
No public comments were recorded during the meeting. The board did not take votes on the policies at this session; items will return for future consideration.
