Board member Miss Smith pushed back that state Department of Education numbers and district FISH adjustments showed multiple grades and schools with significant declines, and said she would not "back down from" her stance that consolidation deserves public consideration. "The data is very clear," she said.
Several trustees and the superintendent said the retreat data presented earlier did not support closing schools now and warned that repeated public rehashing could undermine voter outreach for the proposed half‑cent sales surtax. One trustee said previous analysis indicated closures would require disruptive rezoning and would not necessarily yield the financial gains proponents expected.
After discussion, the board approved a motion (4–0) directing the superintendent and staff to prepare a strategic enrollment growth plan that: identifies enrollment "leaks," provides targets, tactics and metrics, and includes a communications plan so the district can present one consistent, data‑backed narrative to the public. The superintendent agreed to bring back deliverables documented in the prior workshop.
