Superintendent Dr. Mitchell outlined a multi-tier approach the board could adopt: national conferences (rotation or chair/vice‑chair annually), mandatory regional VSBA attendance for all members, two optional VSBA sessions per year, and local professional development and retreats. He also recommended rotating attendance at national conferences so all members could participate over time.
Board members raised transparency concerns about how the board’s training budget is managed and asked for a clearer budget breakdown and monthly reporting of expenditures related to board professional development. The superintendent offered to draft policy language incorporating the categories discussed and present it at the next meeting.
No formal vote was taken on a policy change; the board directed staff to draft a proposal based on the discussion.
