The Spotsylvania County School Board voted on March 10 to add Juneteenth as a 12‑month employee holiday for the coming school year.
Ms Williams of human resources explained that the board approves 12‑month employee holidays annually and that calendar decisions depend on how particular dates fall in the week. She said Juneteenth in June 2026 falls on a Friday, but for FY25 (June 19, 2025) it falls on a Thursday and will be observed as a summer‑school holiday for students and teachers; county staff also recognize the day.
Board members discussed possible adjustments to the winter holiday period if adding Juneteenth would otherwise push the contracted days above the number specified in employee contracts. Superintendent Doctor Mitchell said staff could consider shifting a day during the Thanksgiving/Christmas timeframe to accommodate Juneteenth as a standard practice going forward. Ms Williams said human resources would include the change in standard operating procedures for calendar construction.
A motion to approve Juneteenth as a 12‑month employee holiday was moved and seconded and the board recorded the motion as passing 4–0.
Next steps: Human resources will update calendar‑building procedures and the operating documents that set the 243 scheduled work days for 12‑month employees.
