Board to have superintendent facilitate officer elections under proposed organizational meeting policy

At the Nov. 17 work session the Spotsylvania County School Board advanced a first reading of proposed edits to Policy BCA that would have the superintendent facilitate the board’s organizational meeting (the annual selection of chair and vice chair).
Under the proposed change the superintendent would call for nominations, manage the order of nominations, and ask for a motion, second and roll‑call vote. Board members sought language that explicitly allows members to vote for more than one nominee during the process and asked that tie procedures and subsequent ballot steps be added. The board agreed that, after the nomination and informal tally, a formal motion should be made to appoint the person receiving the most votes.
“Nothing prevents a board member from voting more than once during the process as names are called,” one board member said; staff agreed to draft clearer language and a script that will be distributed to the board before a second reading in December. The first reading passed 4‑0.
