Board debates memorial policy clarity while approving July 14 minutes with edits

Board members spent part of the Aug. 25 work session clarifying whether the July 14 minutes accurately recorded actions and whether the division should revisit policy CCF, which governs student and staff memorials.
Dr. Daniels said the policy appeared "half‑baked" and recommended the board task the superintendent to reconvene a committee to review the policy against guidance from the U.S. Department of Education and professional associations for school psychologists and social workers. "I do propose that we revisit that policy and... establish... a committee to review this policy focusing on clear guidance and parameters," Dr. Daniels said.
Other board members pushed back on reversing prior procedural decisions. Miss Cole noted she had asked to waive the second reading previously so the memorial could proceed, saying staff had brought the issue forward in prior meetings and felt the division had time to discuss parameters. Miss Phelps defended the board’s deliberations and said the memorial had broad community support.
After discussion the board voted to approve the July 14 minutes with Dr. Medawar’s submitted edits; the motion passed unanimously. The policy‑review suggestion was left as direction for staff and the superintendent rather than as a formal board policy motion.
