The Spotsylvania County School Board voted unanimously Aug. 25 to adopt a three‑day graduation schedule for 2026 that spreads ceremonies across separate days and favors morning start times to reduce evening traffic and let families attend multiple graduations.
Mr. Hicks, who led the graduation‑schedule committee, presented two stadium‑based options and described the committee’s work with principals and counseling directors. "We met during the month of August... and came up with a consensus to make the ceremonies across three days," he said. Committee members noted tradeoffs, including weather risks and possible ticket limits if ceremonies were moved indoors.
Several board members said they preferred Option 1’s morning times because it would reduce congestion and allow families and board members to attend multiple ceremonies. "I prefer the AM option — it allows for families to have a pretty full day after graduation," said one board member. The board discussed asynchronous instructional days for some schools to allow faculty participation and asked staff about testing and substitute‑coverage implications.
After discussion the board moved to adopt Option 1 and voted 6–0. Staff said they would take the board’s feedback back to the committee, finalize details and publish the dates and logistics as early as the next day.
