Spotsylvania board approves superintendent's outside work despite public opposition

The Spotsylvania County School Board voted unanimously on Jan. 12 to approve Superintendent Clint Mitchell's request to undertake outside work, including adjunct teaching and similar professional activities.

The agenda item prompted public comment from residents sharply divided on optics and priorities. Wanda Stroh told the board she opposed permitting additional outside work for the superintendent, saying it created "physical and symbolic distance" from the district and cited evidence (Longwood University's website) that Mitchell had already taught as an adjunct without recorded authorization in board minutes. Stroh urged the board to reject the agenda item and place the superintendent's full focus in Spotsylvania.

Other commenters—including Vanessa Lynch and multiple board members during debate—defended the superintendent. Lynch said Mitchell's outside work benefits the district by training future educators and strengthening professional networks. Board members who spoke in support cited Mitchell's leadership over the past 18 months and described outside engagements as ways he brings professional knowledge and pipelines of talent back to the division.

Board discussion acknowledged the public concerns and the fact that language in the superintendent's contract had previously been amended to permit him to reside outside the district after board action. Several members said they would monitor the superintendent's commitments; nonetheless the motion to approve the outside work passed 7-0.

The board recorded its approvals and moved on to other agenda items; the meeting did not include an amendment to the superintendent's contract at that time.
