Spotsylvania board condemns threats; superintendent displays documents to counter credential claims

Mrs. Jackson, chair of the Spotsylvania County School Board, opened the meeting by condemning violent and harassing language directed at board members and staff and saying she will remove anyone who disrupts meetings.

"If you come to the podium and make a mockery of very serious harm, violence, and crimes against children, I will ask that you leave this room immediately," she said, explaining that prior removals were for disruptive and offensive conduct.

Superintendent Dr. Mitchell told the board and the public that he and his fellow board members have received graphic threats and personal attacks online. To address public questions about his background, he displayed a set of identity and immigration documents, saying he had his original birth certificate from Saint Lucia, visas, permanent‑residency paperwork, and passports on hand.

"My immigration status and my education is not up for discussion," Mitchell said, adding that the meeting should focus on the work of the schools and the division’s accomplishments. He also highlighted academic and program achievements across the district, including AP and accountability recognitions.

During public comments several residents voiced support for the chair and superintendent. Moe Pettway said the board had vetted and hired Mitchell and that community members should not demand that he "prove" his qualifications. Cassie Gregorio Palmer and Ronald Fisk thanked the board for enforcing decorum and urged continued focus on students.

The board emphasized that information will be shared when appropriate and after staff complete due diligence. The meeting proceeded to regular business without further incident.
