Wilson Area SD board swears in two members, approves $880,846.53 in bills and hires new building supervisor

Wilson Area School District Board President Judith Herbstreith called the Jan. 12, 2026 regular meeting to order at 7 p.m. and the board officially swore in Joanna Richardson and Erin Mirenda-Moore as the Region II representatives.
Student representative Katelyn Hartrum briefed the board on a range of student activities, including theater production set construction, Engineering & Design Club projects, a planned senior class trip to Pocono Valley and upcoming debates and service events. Board member Janis Krieger then reported enrollment and program updates from Northampton County Community College, noting spring enrollment was up about 7% over last year and highlighting health sciences interest and an upcoming commencement ceremony on Jan. 24.
The meeting moved to routine business. Board member Janis Krieger moved and Johnathan Jones seconded acceptance of the Treasurer’s Report and related finance items. The board approved the December 2025 Investment Schedule and routine bills, including regular bills totaling $880,846.53, retiree bills of $1,082.71 and a capital reserve payment of $5,598.75; votes recorded Aye 9, Nay 0.
The board approved vendor selection for fuel oil for the 2026–2027 school year through the Northampton/Monroe/Pike County Joint Purchasing Board (motion moved by Linda Baskwell, seconded by Molly Sunderlin; vote Aye 9, Nay 0).
On personnel matters, the board accepted the resignations of Joseph Sapienza (Supervisor of Building and Grounds, effective Jan. 3) and Hailey Mehlig (8th grade special education teacher, effective Jan. 6). The board appointed Colton Frey as Supervisor of Building and Grounds at an annual salary of $90,000, effective Feb. 9, 2026, contingent on receipt of required Act 34, 114, 151 and 168 disclosure forms. Additional appointments approved included an Other Driver (Robert Bastian), a part-time custodian (Hailey Behler), a volunteer drama assistant (Tamme Westbrooks), a temporary part-time financial clerk (hours/rate specified) and several substitutes; the board also approved job descriptions for Instructional Aide, Recess Aide and Temporary Financial Clerk. All personnel motions were carried by voice vote with tallies reported as Aye 9, Nay 0.
The board approved a memorandum of understanding with J. Kyle Walter for interim building-grounds duties (not to exceed $1,400, starting Jan. 17, 2026) and set committee meeting dates for Facilities and Policy Development. At 7:46 p.m., the board entered an executive session to discuss legal/litigation matters with administrators and the solicitor present; the board reconvened at 8:33 p.m. and adjourned at 8:34 p.m.
No formal policy changes, ordinances or citations to statutes were introduced during the public portion of the meeting. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at 7 p.m. in the administration building.
