Kewanee outlines cleanup and repair plan for mobile home parks; 38 units occupied, 2 by squatters

City staff updated the council on cleanup and repair efforts at local mobile home parks, including contractor deployment and an assessment of occupancy.
Keith Edwards told the council that Colona-based Elite Outdoor Solutions will begin removing junk, mowing tall grass and addressing weeds starting Nov. 21 and will remain until the parks meet a minimally acceptable condition. City Manager Gary Bradley said fire personnel canvassed the parks to identify occupied units and found 38 occupied units; the city also identified two units occupied by squatters.
Kevin Newton reported one active leak the city is aware of and described Public Works’ plan for repairs. Councilmembers discussed potential grants to fund repairs and said the city is awaiting a response to one grant application expected within roughly two months.
No formal action was taken at the meeting; staff will proceed with contractor coordination and repair planning pending the grant decision.
