Shorewood recreation update highlights new programs, bowling-alley grant and operational fixes

Erin Cross, representing Shorewood’s recreation and community services department, briefed the school board on Oct. 28 about programs and operational work completed over the last seven months, and outlined near-term plans.
Cross recognized staff, noted new hires (Ashley McGee and Costa Eben), and highlighted a Seed Foundation grant that makes possible a January pilot with Empower Sports to run early-release Wednesday programming at Lake Bluff and Atwater with an initial capacity of about 40 students at each site. Cross also described a software transition from RecPro to Active Net, the failure and delayed replacement of an automated pool-cleaning robot that required operational workarounds, and a Shorewood Foundation grant to revitalize the district bowling alley that included new ball returns and a new lane oiler.
Students and rec staff who spoke to the board described leadership and skill-building opportunities through summer camps, swim instruction and junior assistant roles. Board members praised staff contributions, asked about expanding flag-football for older grades and lifeguard certification plans, and were told the department is coordinating with the district buildings-and-grounds team and a nearby fitness center to increase staffing and certification capacity.
Cross said the department will continue program refinements, pursue partnerships, and expand student leadership opportunities as funding and capacity allow.
