Lake Bluff students unveil centennial mural at Shorewood school board meeting

Students from Lake Bluff Elementary presented the school’s centennial mural to the Shorewood School District board on Oct. 28, describing a months-long project that involved the whole school and community funding.
Principal Johanna French introduced the students and explained that the 15-by-6-foot mural was funded by the Seed Foundation and the Lake Bluff PTO. Under the guidance of art teacher Ms. Quarter, students chose a Cubism-influenced approach and assigned animals to represent traits such as curiosity, kindness and perseverance. Students described building the mural from glass tile pieces, cement board, and mosaics; every class, including 4K, participated in placing tiles.
Students said the hardest parts were patience and coordinating with substitutes; several named student contributors described their roles in design and installation. The board thanked the students and staff and praised the mural as a lasting tribute to the school’s 100-year history.
The mural will remain on display at Lake Bluff Elementary. Board members encouraged wider community visits and noted the mural as an example of student leadership and community partnership.
