Teacher contests nonrenewal during public comment; students urge stronger arts funding

During public comment, Steve McDonald — a 17-year educator in Colorado — addressed the board to contest his nonrenewal. "I am not asking for my job back. I am here because I know I did nothing to lose it," McDonald said, adding that his nonrenewal letter misidentified his position and that his evaluations had been consistently effective or highly effective across four districts.
McDonald told the board he had been asked to serve on building leadership teams this year and said the timing of the district’s recommendation was difficult given those responsibilities. He urged the board and community to document concerns and to seek clarity about the process used by district personnel.
Two students followed in public comment. Jaslyn Martinez, a former student, told the board she observed a decline in resources and curricular challenge in performing-arts classes and asked for protected funding for band and choir. "A lot of people dropped band...because they weren't feeling challenged enough," Martinez said. Alex, a graduating senior planning to study clarinet performance in college, asked the district to restore a fifth-grade band program and proposed an artist fund to bring professionals into classrooms.
The board thanked the speakers; there was no board action on personnel during public comment. The meeting later moved into an executive session to receive legal advice on a pending civil case (motion and vote recorded separately).
