Steamboat Springs School Board elects leadership, assigns committee seats and certifies mill levy

Kevin Callahan was elected president of the Steamboat Springs School Board at the start of the Dec. 8 regular meeting after a nomination by board member Laura Craig and a unanimous roll-call vote. Kevin Callahan then presided over subsequent officer elections, which also produced Laura Craig as vice president, Leah Helm as secretary and Jane Toothaker as treasurer.
The officer elections took place under the board's reorganization procedures. Laura Craig nominated Kevin Callahan for president and, after no other nominations were made, the board held a roll-call election. Deb Genesta called the roll; the board voted unanimously to elect Callahan. Callahan then opened nominations and the board elected Laura Craig to the vice-presidency, Leah Helm as secretary and Jane Toothaker as treasurer, each by roll-call vote.
Why it matters: The board's leadership choices determine who sets meeting agendas, represents the district to external partners and leads bargaining and committee work in the coming year. Newly elected officers immediately took on the tasks of assigning board representatives to schools and external committees.
In the same session the board appointed members to school-site and external committees, including Education Fund Board representation, bargaining roles and CASB delegate duties. Kevin Callahan took the bargaining lead; Laura Craig agreed to serve as the Education Fund Board representative; Jane Toothaker agreed to support bargaining and accepted Strawberry Park school representation. The board approved the slate by motion and unanimous vote.
The board also certified the district's 2025 tax levy for collection in 2026, listing total mills as 13.209. President Callahan read a resolution's motion to certify the levy "as presented by the board," and the measure passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting in the affirmative.
