Board delays action on GP‑6 committee principles, opts to workshop language after members flag conflicts

The Steamboat Springs School Board discussed proposed edits to governance policy GP‑6 on Nov. 3, with several members saying a new line requiring committee concerns be directed privately to the superintendent could conflict with the district's existing GP‑10‑e policy on handling concerns.

"Any questions or concerns arising from committee meetings must be directed privately to the district superintendent" appeared in the proposed GP‑6 language; Board member Leah said she was concerned it conflicted with GP‑10‑e, which addresses how concerns raised by parents, community members and staff should be handled.

Leah told the board she favors cross‑referencing GP‑10‑e rather than replacing its procedures, and Kevin urged that the policies be harmonized so the district does not present inconsistent practices in multiple places. Laura raised similar concerns about how the language might limit the board's role as a community voice.

"I think it would be clearest if those kind of were reflective," Leah said, urging the board to reference GP‑10‑e within GP‑6. Katie Lee characterized the item as a discussion rather than a first reading and agreed to add specific language to clarify that board members may provide updates during the board member update portion of meetings, while further discussion or action on those topics must occur only as an agenda item.

No formal vote was taken on GP‑6; the board asked staff to bring the proposal to a work session for deeper review and to reconcile overlaps with GP‑10‑e and related policies before any first reading or action.
