Council alerted to YMCA pause of youth center operations; lease review planned

Mayor Anthony Wright informed the council on March 9 that the YMCA posted that its local youth center is effectively closed for general programming and currently provides only counseling and youth housing services. Wright said the city’s lease requires operation of a youth center, so staff will meet with the YMCA branch manager to explore amending the lease and to determine options for the space.
Wright said the YMCA has been unsuccessful obtaining certain grant funds historically used to support the branch and that the organization relies in part on County grants. Depending on how long the space remains unused as a youth center, Wright said the council may need to decide during 2027 budget discussions whether to continue leasing the office space at no charge for those services or pursue alternative uses.
Council did not take formal action; staff will return with recommended lease amendments or other options after meeting with YMCA representatives.
